Macbeth "Be A Man" Writing Assignment

Macbeth “Be A Man” Writing Assignment
Nick Fischer period 3

1.     Pg. 43 Lines 56-61 “That made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, you were a man; and to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man. Nor time nor place did then adhere, and yet you would make both. They have made themselves, and that there fitness now.”-Lady Macbeth

In this quote, Lady Macbeth is criticizing Macbeth for trying to bail on their plan to kill Duncan. She feels he isn’t being a man about it, and she feels betrayed and was angry at the whole situation.

2.     Pg. 167 Lines 10-12 “For certain, sir, he is not. I have a file of all the gentry. There is siwards son and many unrough youths that even now protest there first manhood.” –Lenox

In this quote, Malcolm’s army had just arrived at Macbeths castle and were planning on where they were going to attack. Shakespeare shows here that the young boys fighting in the army are becoming men, and are off to do something bigger and better with there lives.

3.     Pg. 169 Lines 17-20 “Go prick thy face and over-red thy fear, thou lily livered boy. What soldiers patch? Death of thy soul! Those linen cheeks of thine are counselors to fear. What soldiers, whey-face?”-Macbeth

Here Macbeth is talking about how he thinks the battle is going to turn out. He doesn’t have a good feeling about the whole thing, but he says he will not go down without a fight. He will do what he can to stay a man and protect his throne from Macduff and Malcolm.

4.     Pg. 177 Line 11 “I have almost forgot the taste of tears.”-Macbeth

In this quote, Macbeth is stating he has not cried in a very long time, meaning he has been strong and manly even in his early years. He is also restating he will not go down without a fight in order to protect his throne.

5.     Pg. 187-188 Lines 44-48 “Your son, my lord, has paid a soldiers debt. He only lived but till he was a man, the which no sooner had his prowess confirmed in the unshrinking station where he fought, but like a man he died.”-Ross

In this quote, Ross is telling Siward that his son has recently died in battle. He reassured him that he was a strong boy, and he fought like a man, and ultimately died like a man.

The Odyssey Analysis

The Odyssey Analysis

In the story “The Odyssey”, the main theme seems to have something to do with valuing your life to the fullest. You can identify this theme the most in books 11, 12, 13, 16, 19, 21, and 22. For example, the overall theme in book 11 is “appreciate life while living it”, and in book 16, the theme is “there is a time and place for everything, be patient.” Also, a quote directly from the story that helps prove the overall theme is on page 261, and lines 411 and 412. The quote is “Ah Odysseus, Alcinous replied, one look at you and we know that you are no one who would cheat us.” This quote shows how much Odysseus values his life, and how he wants to do good for the people who deserve it. And he wants to show the people who are nothing but bad, that what they are doing is wrong.

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a very powerful and mighty character. He changes a lot of people’s lives, and is out there only to do good. He is an inspiration to many, and it would be hard to match all of the deeds he has done. But, no one can seem to believe he is such a good person, only because of things they have heard about him. For example, on page 351 line 463, a lady says “your violent, vicious, scheming…” this only goes to show Odysseus is there to show bad people that what they are doing is wrong, but he is the only one that notices there evil doings, and others who know what he did to them think he is out to kill for no reason. It makes sense, but people needed to come to their senses and realize who is truly good, and who is truly bad.

Another example of what theme I think “The Odyssey” is when Odysseus and Telemachus murder all of the suitors who think they can replace Odysseus as king. They know it would be a sin to do that, and Odysseus caught them red handed in a rigged challenge to become king. This event starts on page 440 line 15, when Odysseus shot Antinous in the throat with an arrow. Odysseus was a brutal person, but everyone he killed deserved it. Another example of his brutality was on page 452 line 462 when he tells the maids of the castles to clean up the blood and bodies which Odysseus and his son have killed, and then later the maids would be killed by hanging. This might not have been the most reasonable thing to do, but it just goes to show you doing the wrong things can have serious consequences, so you will always be better off doing the right thing.  So in the end, the main theme of books 11, 12, 13, 16, 19, 21, and 22, is “Live life to its fullest, and you will always be better off doing the right thing.”

Theme of "The Road"

From my point of view, I think the theme of “The Road” is how people can react in such disparity. In this story specifically, the man and the boy are living in a world that is wiped out by some kind of human extinction, and they are living with the bare minimum. For example, throughout the story the man and boy search broken down houses and cars for any form of food. This goes on for several years. They do this on a daily basis, and the man promises the boy they would not resort to cannibalism like almost everyone else in the world that survived the extinction. In the end of the book, the father dies of a fever, which is kind of ironic because they both survived the big extinction, but a simple fever took down his father. It is a shame he had to leave his son on their ever long quest to find some trace of humanity in the inhumane world they were living in.

Joe Mauer

Joe Mauer as of today is the highest paid catcher in all of Major League Baseball, and his performance is just as high as his paycheck. Joe began his legacy during his rookie year playing with the Twins in 2004. Ever since, he has been awarded many awards for his leading batting averages, and performance as an outstanding catcher. Joe has won the all star award 4 times, the American League MVP once, the Gold Glove Award 4 times, and he was the American league batting champion 3 times. Joe has received all of these awards over the course of 6 years of playing on the Minnesota Twins. With that information, it is easy to see that Joe Mauer is arguably one of the best baseball players of all time. Even though his most recent season wasn’t all that great, he still has a lot of fans with more faith in him than you could even believe.

Opinion Paper

My opinion paper is about banning pop in schools, which many districts have already done. First of all, drinking pop on a daily basis is straight up unhealthy. Second of all, millions of Americans are struggling with being overweight, and the temptation of a pop machine next to their locker is not a step forward to losing weight. Finally, pop causes serious cavities. Cavities cause serious dental bills. In this economy, many families cannot afford expensive dental bills.

A 12-ounce can of coke has 39 grams of sugar.  That’s 39 grams of sugar you could have saved yourself from if you would have chose a bottle of water over coke. In one night, a can of coke can melt a 12-ounce sirloin steak down to gristle and fat. Not the best thing student students should be drinking while taking a test their college transcripts rely on. Also, drinking something with that much sugar in it gives you something called empty calories, which give you absolutely no vitamins or minerals. It only makes you want more and more food, causing obesity. Those are only few of the facts about pop that will make you think twice while headed to your nearest vending machine.

The state with the fattest people as of today is Mississippi, where 68% of people are overweight. Think of being in a classroom of students where about two thirds of them are fat. There is something wrong with that image. Allowing the selling of pop in schools is a step forward towards making that obesity rate even higher than it already is. One main cause of obesity is the lack of physical activity. Drinking pop all day makes people crash and lose energy right away. And with that little amount of energy in you, there is no motivation to lose that extra weight. It just keeps getting worse and worse. Also, having too much sugar in your body is not good for your developing brain. It seems like it’s the exact opposite of what they should be selling in a learning environment.

Many families in this day and age are undergoing very hard times financially.  Dentist bills are also getting more expensive by the day. So the last thing a struggling family needs is a two thousand dollar dentist bill to drill cavities because of there child drinking pop they buy at school on a daily basis. Many families cannot afford dental insurance either, making dental checkups even more expensive. Lastly, cavities developing in someone’s mouth without being attended to can cause tooth loss, which is a problem in many cases. These are even more reasons why schools should give more healthy options to students, other than sugary drinks.

39 grams of sugar is a lot of sugar. You could easily avoid that unnecessary sugar by choosing something other than a coke. Also, 68% of Mississippi is overweight. Help them out by giving their students better options other than pop to fill there schools vending machines with. Lastly, many families just cannot afford to get cavities filled. Take pop vending machines out of schools to give those families something better to spend their money on other than filling unnecessary cavities.

Rob Dyrdek: 10 Steps of The Hero's Path

Call to Adventure: Robs successful life began with his urge to help others and to be a successful person. He had always been an athletic person, but when he first saw a skateboard, he knew it was his call to adventure. This quote proves Skateboarding was the trigger to ignite his life long quest of being influential to others.
"Besides a long and influential career as a professional skateboarder, Rob is also a TV star, a filmmaker, a serial entrepreneur, a marketing whiz, and a multi-faceted philanthropist dedicated to supporting skateboarding."

Hero Partners: One of Robs Hero Partners is his cousin Chris Pfaff (Drama). He does almost everything with Chris, and he couldn't be where he is now without them.

Heros tests: In one episode of Rob Dyrdeks Fantasy Factory, he makes multiple challenges with people. Some are a big deal, some are not. One challenge he faced was a game of S-K-A-T-E against his fellow pro skateboarder Steve Berra, which the winner gets $10,000. He also completed the task of becoming a professional skateboarder and is inspiring thousands of people out there to get out there and serve for there community.
"I just want to help people out, thats all i ever really feel like doing, is putting others before myself."-Rob Dyrdek
Quote was from an episode of "Rob Dyrdeks Fantasy Factory"

Losing the Guide: Rob loses one of his best friends, Chris Boykin when he is forced to leave the show for unknown reasons. Chris and Rob together inspired many people out there.

Ultimate Boon: Robs ultimate boon is his skateboard. He inspires many people out there with his skill at skateboarding, and with those skills, he also teaches people lessons they will never forget.
"Rob has to be the street-smartest person out there. He is successful in so many other ways than skateboarding its unbelievable."-Chris Boykin
Quote was from an episode of "Rob & Big".

Temptation: Rob said there are plenty of temptations that tag along with skateboarding these days, everything from drugs and alcohol to fitting in with the wrong group. People always get the idea that skateboarders are bad people because the police are always kicking them out of places, but that is only because there are not nearly as many legal skateparks as there are basketball courts. Skateboarding is a sport too, just like basketball, and Rob is doing what he can to get that word out. Rob has been building skateparks all around America to keep kids out of trouble for several years now.
"As a kid, Rob always had trouble finding places to skateboard without getting kicked out or ticketed. So when Rob was able to get money as a pro skateboarder, he started building skateparks for kids looking for a place to practice."
http://www.kidzworld.com/article/8411-rob-dyrdek-biography

Sacrifice: Rob must sacrifice his life as a normal person in order to make a TV show to get his voice heard. This isn't  necessarily a bad thing, but it is defiantly a major turn in the heros life in order to complete his Heros Quest.
"We are having such a unique lifestyle right now. Theres no going back to Kansas now."-Rob Dyrdek to Chris Boykin
Quote was from an episode of "Rob and Big".

Final Battle: Rob's Final Battle would have to be obtaining and managing the Fantasy Factory. So much goes on in there its unbelievable. So many people are inspired by the things he does and his always positive never-look-back attitude, and the Factory only contributes to that. But with the fun and games that goes on inside there, he had to work for years to get to where he is with his life, and the Fantasy Factory is the peak of his life. Its what makes him Rob Dyrdek.
"The Fantasy Factory to me is, well, pretty self explanatory. But also, Its to inspire people to go big. If I can do it, you can too."
http://www.daylife.com/topic/Rob_Dyrdek/quotes

Elixir: Rob's Elixir would have to be the changed image of skateboarders he has made. His favorite thing in life is skateboarding, and helping out there image is his main goal. What happens with Skateboardings new image is it opens up many new doors for the sport, and also opens more peoples eyes to see how much talent the sport really needs. Rob expects skateboarding to grow even bigger than it already is because of all the noise he has made in the everyday world about Skateboarding.

Luke Skywalker from “Star Wars” vs. Doug from “Blue Diamond”

Luke Skywalker from “Star Wars” vs. Doug from “Blue Diamond”

Doug from “Blue Diamond” and Luke Skywalker from “Star Wars” are both stories that classify as a hero’s journey.  Doug’s story was a lot a like Luke Skywalker’s journey in some ways, but in other ways, it was a lot different. For example, they both saved someone’s life. Doug saved Quinn from committing suicide.  “Blanco Bronco,” I remind him, “You gotta hang around to hear their new album next month.  Promise me that much.” Luke saved Princess Leah from being prosecuted on the Death Star. Also, both Doug and Luke denied their call to be a hero when they were first given the chance. When Quinn first tried to get Doug to travel with him to Las Vegas, Doug replied, “No, Quinn, you’re not going to do this! It’s crazy, even for you.” When Obi Wan Kanobi told Luke that Luke must go seek revenge, Luke also replied that he would not go.  In the end, they both ended up going and fulfilling their hero’s journeys.  Doug and Luke also had differences in their journey’s. The biggest difference was the settings of the two stories. Doug’s story setting was in modern day in the United States.  “Where down the road?” says Doug.  “Las Vegas” replied Quinn.   Luke’s setting was far, far, away and on a whole different galaxy.  That one difference makes these stories sound completely different and unrelated in many ways. They have completely different vibes.  In conclusion, I enjoyed both of these stories and their similarities of being hero’s journeys and also their differences with completely opposite settings.
